A brief history of Children's House Montessori School

Children's House was founded in 1967 by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Austin, members of Faith Lutheran Church. Mr. and Mrs. Austin appreciated the uniqueness of a Montessori program and wanted to make one available here in DeLand by making use of Sunday School classrooms during the week. In December 1969, the Austin's were moving and Faith Lutheran Church agreed to assume the ownership of the school. A board of elected church members was established to directly administer Children's House School. In making the Montessori school part of its educational ministry the church hoped to offer a quality preschool program that was also affordable. With the arrival of our three present directors, the school has shown much growth. Each of our preschool and elementary classrooms is headed by an A.M.I. (Association Montessori International) certified teacher-director.

Faith Lutheran Church has continued to support the school in many ways, the most visible being the spacious classrooms specially designed for our use here in the educational wing. The Children's House Board continues to meet each month to establish policies and make decisions in conjunction with the staff to insure the best possible program for our school.
